兵庫県を拠点に制作を行う造形作家・小西光裕の個展を開催します。

彫刻を学んだ小西は、カトラリーという日常的なかたちを手がかりに制作を続けています。しかしそれらは、「丁寧な暮らし」や既存のテーブルマナーをなぞるための道具ではありません。スプーンやフォークという機能の輪郭をまといながら、その奥にひそむ、曖昧で個人的な感覚へと触れていきます。

そこには、パブリックな規範としてのテーブルマナーでは測ることのできない、ごく私的な感覚が宿っています。それは作り手の内側から立ち上がりながら、同時に受け手の創造性へとひらかれていくものでもあります。人間の情緒への静かな観察から生まれるその佇まいは、詩的な現代彫刻として私たちの前に現れます。

例えば彼の近年の作品である《フォーク前夜、》は、真鍮の塊から削り出される直前のフォークのかたちを、機能が立ち上がるその手前で留めた作品です。「前夜」という言葉が示すように、それは完成ではなく、これから何かが始まる気配を湛えています。テーブルに置かれたとき、カトラリーは単なる道具を超え、身体とモノのあいだに静かな緊張と期待が生み出される可能性を示唆します。

スプーンやフォークといった形としての機能を備えながらも、その内側には、近しい誰かとだけ共有されれば十分な感覚やプライベートマナーが潜んでいるのではないでしょうか。本展が、そうした私的な作法を、モノとの新しい関係の一つの形として考える時間となれば幸いです。

We are pleased to present a solo exhibition by sculptor Mitsuhiro Konishi, based in Hyogo.

Having studied sculpture, Konishi continues to create works using the everyday forms of cutlery as his starting point. Yet these are not tools meant to trace the contours of “careful living” or existing table manners. While wearing the functional outlines of spoons and forks, they reach into the ambiguous, personal sensations hidden within.

Within them dwells an intensely private sensibility, one that cannot be measured by the public norms of table manners. It arises from within the maker while simultaneously opening itself to the viewer's creativity. Emerging from a quiet observation of human emotion, this presence manifests before us as poetic contemporary sculpture.

For example, his recent work, “the night before, fork” captures the form of a fork just before it is carved from a solid block of brass, halted at the very moment its function is about to emerge. As the word “night before” suggests, it is not completion, but rather holds the promise of something about to begin. When placed on the table, cutlery transcends being mere tools, hinting at the potential for quiet tension and anticipation to arise between body and object.

While possessing the functional form of a spoon or fork, might there not lie within them a sense of intimacy and private etiquette, sufficient only when shared with someone close? It would be our pleasure if this exhibition becomes a time to consider such private manners as one form of a new relationship with objects.
