5月16日(土)より、美術家 寺山紀彦(てらやま のりひこ)の個展をCIBONE(表参道)にて開催いたします。

寺山紀彦の制作は、何かを新たに生み出すのではなく、すでに存在しているものに働きかけながら、人と物、そして空間とのあいだに存在する違和感に着目しています。存在している事象を整え、わずかに手を施すことで「間」を編み直す。その静かな操作によって、私たちの知覚はゆるやかに揺さぶられます。

自身の制作の根本について、こう言います。

人が美しいと規定しているものにあえて手を入れることで生じる違和感。
人が知覚的に理解している情報を食べて咀嚼し、吐き出すことで生じる違和感。

本展における作品は、情報として視覚的に立ち上がることで完成することを前提としていません。画像として均質化された瞬間にその違和感は失われ、情報として把握されたときには、すでに作家の求める美は存在しないからです。

先入観や情報は、私たちが既に知っている視覚像を補完し、「理解したもの」として認識させてしまいます。見えているものと、見えていなくても成立してしまうもの。そのあいだに違和感が残るとき、人と物との距離が問い返されます。

私たちが「美しい」と感じる瞬間は、そのモノ自体に備わっているだけではなく、見ることによって立ち上がる関係の中にあります。

本展は、目に見えるものを疑うのではなく、見えないまま成立してしまう認識を問い直す試みです。目で見ることによって立ち上がる美しさと、そのあいだに生まれる「間」を提示します。

Starting Saturday, May 18, we will be hosting a solo exhibition by artist Norihiko Terayama at CIBONE (Omotesando).

Norihiko Terayama’s work does not seek to create something new; rather, it engages with what already exists, focusing on the sense of dissonance that exists between people, objects, and space. By arranging existing phenomena and applying subtle interventions, he reweaves the “interval” between them. Through these quiet manipulations, our perceptions are gently unsettled.

Regarding the foundation of his practice, he states:

The sense of dissonance that arises when one dares to intervene in what people have defined as beautiful.
The sense of dissonance that arises when one consumes, chews, and regurgitates the information that people perceive and understand.

The works in this exhibition are not premised on being completed simply by emerging visually as information. This is because the sense of dissonance is lost the moment they are homogenized into images, and by the time they are grasped as information, the beauty the artist seeks no longer exists.

Preconceptions and information supplement the visual images we already know, causing us to recognize them as “things we understand.” Things that are visible, and things that hold true even if they are not visible. When a sense of dissonance lingers in that space, the distance between people and objects is called into question.

The moments we perceive as “beautiful” do not reside solely within the object itself, but within the relationship that emerges through the act of seeing.

This exhibition is not an attempt to doubt what is visible, but rather to reexamine the perceptions that take shape even when unseen. It presents the beauty that arises through the act of seeing, and the “interval” that emerges in that space.
