オランダ・アイントホーフェンを拠点に活動するデザイナー Piet Hein Eek(ピート ヘイン イーク)は、スクラップ材木や工場廃棄物といったものも素材とみなし、独自の作品を発表し続けています。

彼の特徴は、素材を選ぶことではなく、その捉え方にあります。目の前にある素材に対して、人の手によってどのように価値を与えるのか。その思考と実践にこそ、彼の仕事の本質があります。

言い換えると、完成されたフォルムを前提とするのではなく、素材そのものに内在する力からかたちを導き出す試みです。廃材や金属、ガラスといった異なる質感や性質は、「美しいと感じるから使う」という極めてシンプルな基準のもとに等価に扱われ、すべてが彼の手によって素材の持つ魅力へと還元されていきます。

本展では、彼のものづくりの原点であるキャビネットに焦点を当て、その仕事を紹介します。象徴的なスクラップウッドシリーズに加え、異なる素材から構成されたキャビネットが一堂に会します。なかでも、約35年前に制作された10台のうちの1台であるスクラップウッドのカップボードは、現在に至る創作の起点を示す作品であり、彼が積み重ねてきた思考と実践の核を明確に伝えるものです。

また、日本の生活様式に応答して制作され、CIBONEでは初披露となる「Window / drawer cabinet」も発表されます。

会期中はデザイナー本人が来日し、オープニングレセプションでは建築家・長坂常(ながさか じょう)とのトークセッションを開催いたします。
また、Piet Hein Eekを敬愛するインテリアスタイリスト・作原文子(さくはら ふみこ)による、本展のための特別なスタイリングもあわせてお楽しみいただけます。

Based in Randa, Eindhoven, designer Piet Hein Eek continues to create unique works by treating scrap wood and factory waste as materials.

What sets him apart is not his choice of materials, but his approach to them. How can human hands imbue the materials before him with value? The essence of his work lies precisely in this line of thinking and practice.

In other words, rather than starting with a predetermined form, he attempts to derive form from the inherent power of the material itself. Different textures and properties—such as scrap wood, metal, and glass—are treated as equals based on the extremely simple criterion of “using them because they feel beautiful,” and through his hands, everything is reduced to the inherent charm of the material.

This exhibition focuses on the cabinet—the origin of his craftsmanship—to introduce his work. In addition to his iconic Scrapwood series, cabinets composed of various materials will be gathered in one place. Among them, the Scrapwood Cupboard—one of ten pieces created approximately 35 years ago—serves as the starting point for his ongoing creative practice and clearly conveys the core of the thought and practice he has accumulated over the years.

Furthermore, the “Window / drawer cabinet,” created in response to Japanese lifestyles and making its debut at CIBONE, will also be unveiled.

The designer himself will be visiting Japan during the exhibition period, and a talk session with architect Jo Nagasaka will be held at the opening reception.
You can also enjoy special styling for this exhibition by interior stylist Fumiko Sakuhara, a great admirer of Piet Hein Eek.
